The inauguration of the "carbon nano-fiber composite material project" for METI's research and development scheme, "Focus 21."
| August 2003 [News Release] |
Nissei Plastic Industrial Co., Ltd. (President: Hozumi Yoda, Head Office: Sakaki-machi, Hanishina-gun, Nagano Pref.), Japan's largest manufacturer of injection molding machines and Nissin Kogyo Co., Ltd. (President: Tamotsu Abe, Head Office: Ueda City, Nagano Pref.), a comprehensive manufacturer of braking systems for automobiles and motorcycles, jointly have been making a proposal to undertake the "carbon nano-fiber composite material project" among the business plans, "Focus 21," of The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Recently they have received notice of the adoption of their proposal from NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization), a trustee organization of METI. This joint research project will be kicked off at the opening of "the first promotion committee" to be held on July 17th.
Both of the companies are slated to entrust researches to and exchange information with each university and publicly-run experimental research institute respectively. The project is of the cutting-edge technology to be sent out from Nagano to all the world and is expected to lead industries in the 21st century.
The following are the three themes for the technology development
| (1) |
The development of high functional composite materials with light metal alloy and carbon nano-fiber |
| (2) |
The development of a molding system with high functional composite materials |
| (3) |
The development of weight-reduced automotive parts with high functional composite materials |
The research and development work will be conducted during three years from fiscal 2003 through 2005, aiming for completion of weight-reduced trial automotive parts in the third year. After that (after completion of the project), the development work will be continued aiming at materializing practical use within 2 - 3 years, and the reduction of emission quantity of carbon dioxide, emitted while driving an automobile, will be made into reality.
In regard to the mold clamping mechanism
* The subsidy rate is 1/2.
* The total subsidy budget for fiscal 2003: about ¥303 million.
* The term of the subsidized project: three years from fiscal 2003 through 2005.

The responsible person: Atsushi Koide, board director and general manager of the Technical Research Institute
The company will develop a technology for compounding carbon nano-fiber and light metal alloy, and a molding system utilizing the technology developed. The system is of a high precision product, of less secondary processing and of high productivity, therefore it is possible to materialize high quality and low cost. Moreover in regard to the achievements of the research and development in the project, in order to widely disseminate the technology all over the world, the company plans to develop it through concluding license agreements. Furthermore, Nissei Plastic will contribute to the establishment of an ecology society in the future by means of developing the technology to the fields of aerospace, electrics and communication, and medical treatment.

The responsible person: Junichi Beppu, board director in charge of R&D Division
The company expects that, by means of materializing practical use of carbon nano-fiber composite materials, the conversion to the products to which light weight materials are applied will be expanded dramatically. It will provide the products all over the world through its domestic and foreign business partners. Nissin Kogyo will develop its original nano-technology such as a technology for uniformly dispersing carbon nano-fiber which is apt to cohere, a technology for improving wettability of carbon nano-fiber with the base material, light metal, and a technology for efficiently molding composite materials. The company also will contribute to the improvement of the global environment through the betterment of mileage by means of reducing weight of automobiles, reduction of carbon dioxide emission and promotion of recycling.
