Hybrid and Electric Injection Machines to be Exhibited at K 2007
August 2007 [News Release]

Nissei Plastic Industrial will exhibit and demonstrate operation of the PNX40-5A hybrid injection molding machine and the NEX50-5E all-electric injection molding machine at the K 2007 Show in Dusseldorf, Germany, which will be held from October 24 to 31. The company will also display its CNT (carbon nanotube) technology.

Outline of Machine Exhibits
1. PNX40-5A Hybrid Injection Molding Machine
The 392-kN (40-ton) PNX40 is a hybrid machine that will be shown for the first time in Europe.
Continuous repeatable molding of a bar flow sample will be demonstrated on the show floor.
The key characteristic of Nissei's hybrid-type molding machines is the Hybrid X Pump System that adopts the innovative X Pump System. This Hybrid X Pump System combines servomotor drive technology and hydraulic drive technology as the driving source for the injection molding machine and it is totally different from standard hybrid systems. By controlling the rotation of the servomotor, the motor provides driving power only when required (it stops when not required).
As a result, up to an approximately 55% reduction in energy consumption is possible compared with Nissei hydraulic machines and furthermore, compared with conventional hydraulic machines, energy efficiency has been greatly improved and for this reason, the rise in the temperature of the hydraulic oil is suppressed and cooling water requirements are thereby reduced. As a result, reductions in cooling water facility expenses such as cooling towers as well as maintenance and running costs are also possible.
In addition, the following performance improvements have been realized.
1. Injection ramp-up time features a high response on a par with all-electric machines.
2. Using fully closed loop control, stable control in the ultra-low speed range of 1 mm/s in injection speed is realized, and the maximum injection speed specification is 550 mm/s (PNX40-2A)
3. Through employing servomotor drive, almost the same low noise operation as all-electrics is achieved.
4. Machine pricing is lower than all-electric molding machines.

Furthermore, the clamping mechanism adopted is the same direct clamping type that is employed in the hydraulic FN (PN) series, of which Nissei has sold in excess of 10,000 units.
The major features are:
1. An accurate clamping force is distributed more uniformly to the mold.
2. Low (appropriate) setting of clamping force is easily possible, and this is effective in terms of saving energy, prolonging the life of the molding machine and molds, and countering defects caused by de-gassing and short shots, etc.
3. Long-term maintaining of clamping mechanism parallelism.
4. Effective for thick molds (deep item molding, hot runners, three plate).
5. Shortening of mold change time for production of multiple small lots.

2. NEX50-5E All-electric Injection Molding Machine
This machine is a 490-kN (50-ton) clamping force type from our company's mainstay NEX Series of all-electric injection molding machines.
On the show floor, molding of a 2.5" thin light guide panel will be demonstrated using a two-cavity mold. The main features of this series are that a function for automatic correction of clamping force as well as high precision metering control are standard features.
The function for automatic correction of clamping force was developed in order to realize a "direct-pressure-type toggle mechanism." Through utilization of expertise regarding direct-pressure clamping mechanisms, which Nissei has been very particular about and that has been accumulated over many years, the function enables use of a toggle clamping mechanism with a similar sensation to direct clamping.
The function allows automatic correction of clamping force in the toggle clamping mechanism that has changed as a result of temperature rises in the mold, etc., during automated or continuous operation of the molding machine. In addition, the clamping force can be altered during automated operation.
The features of the function are 1) clamping force can be varied during molding or setting of the molding parameters with a similar sensation to direct clamping, 2) volume production can be commenced before the tie bar shaft temperature becomes constant and product yields are improved, 3) the initial precision of the mold can be maintained because excess clamping force setting is not required, and 4) the mold protection function (low pressure clamping) has been significantly improved and detection of ultra-thin contaminants is possible.
Through incorporation of these functions, the performance of the "Flat Clamp" mold clamping mechanism of this molding machine that is suited to fast cycle precision molding has been further improved.
High precision metering control is a means whereby either one of "pre-pack" or "precision metering." which both realize high precision metering during molding, can be selected as the control mode.
"Pre-pack" enables control using a standard screw. 1) Metering density and injection volumes are fixed, and the response of the non-return valve is stabilized. 2) This is effective in cases of variations in scrap material and lots. 3) Effects are displayed with the appropriate clamping force production method and when processors want to reduce clamping force is to the barest minimum.
"Precision metering" is effective in case of high-speed screw rotation during fast cycle molding, and it further stabilizes the metering stop position.

3. CNT Technology Exhibit
Commercialization of this technology originally developed by Nissei is underway. The work encompasses high-performance composite materials utilizing carbon nanotubes as well as a "creation" or manufacturing system that utilizes them that were developed in a world first. Commercialization is possible in a diverse variety of sectors including automotive, electrical and electronic components. An exhibit of samples and panel displays will showcase the technology, including examples of plastics and metals utilizing CNTs.

Nissei's booth is Hall 13, 13/D76.
